Is Sugar Really as Harmful as Cigarettes?
According to Dr. Robert Lustig we have been duped. Duped for about the past 40 years. What has been sold to us as ‘healthy’ has often been nothing more than a sugar-laden farce designed to make the food taste good so food companies can make billions of dollars. This man is calling sugar ‘toxic’. Literally, it is killing us. Why?
Well, we now know that sugar has three major effects on our body. It:
- Creates liver fat
- Causes cell ageing
- Interferes with brain function that tells us how much to eat.
Those three things, according to Lustig, is what makes sugar toxic. It’s making us fat and we don’t need it. The liver can only metabolise a little bit of sugar, and believe me when I tell you that you may be fooling yourself into thinking you only eat a ‘little bit of sugar’. Check again.
- Some cans of tuna have sugar added
- You could be eating 1.5 teaspoons of sugar for every dollop of mayonnaise
- Baked beans could have about 4.5 teaspoons of sugar per serving
- Flavoured milks are packed with sugar!
And this is just the beginning.
Why is sugar added to so many (and I mean heaps) of everyday foods?
Because it’s cheap! Adding sugar means that the food makers have taken out a more expensive product. So, let’s just take a salad dressing for example. An oil based dressing can be somewhat expensive to make for a food company. So what do they do? They take out some of that oil and replace it with sugar.
Are you addicted to sugar?
I challenge you this week to question yourself. Look at every food label and count how many teaspoons of sugar you are eating each day. This is important even if you exercise daily and are lean and slim. Just because you can’t see the damage doesn’t mean it’s not happening. Sugar is making us fatter. You just may not be seeing it on the outside just yet.
